When choosing the right drilling rig for you there are three key questions you need to ask yourself.
What will your rig be used for?
The first step to choosing the right drilling rig is determining your purpose. You could purchase a drilling rig for mineral exploration, geotechnical surveying, geothermal extraction, and much more. Each purpose will require a different type of equipment. If you want to extract samples as part of your geotechnical surveying then you may want to look into a reverse circulation drilling rig as it uses compressed air to drive the samples to the surface and reduces the risk of contamination.
When determining your purpose you also have to factor in the materials you will be working with. If you are extracting Ore to determine whether a mining site is economically viable, then you may look to invest in a diamond-core drilling rig. It allows for the structural integrity of the surrounding area to be maintained while ascending vertical sections of the core to move up the drill pipe and be extracted at the surface.
How will you transport your rig?
The environment you want your drilling rig to operate in will determine the type of undercarriage you want to invest in. There are a range of undercarriages to choose from such as trailers, rubber tracks, or skids. If you choose a trailer then you will be able to tow your drilling rig behind your car, making it easy to transport from one destination to the other. If you choose to have rubber trackers then you will have to find alternative methods of transportation for your rig to and from drilling sites, however, you will easily be able to navigate the site once there.
What are you willing to invest?
The final question to ask yourself is what are you willing to invest? Drilling rigs can range widely in price but no rig is going to be a small investment. Factors such as brand, size, reliability, quality of parts and location will all factor into how much you need to spend. Do your research and ensure you are paying the right price.
