What's all the fuss about Geothermal Heating & Cooling?

September 27, 2023

Geothermal heating is the process of harnessing energy from below the earth’s surface and converting it into heat.  The heat can be used for warming or cooling in residential or commercial applications.

Geothermal heating can replace the burning of fossil fuels while also removing the immense pressure on the national electricity system, particularly during peak times. On average for every watt of electricity, you get 1 watt of heat energy compared to the geothermal alternative for every watt of energy put in you get 4 watts of heat energy.

When choosing a geothermal heating system you have two primary choices open-loop and closed-loop. Open-loop uses the groundwater for heating, pumping it straight from below the earth's surface. Once the water is used it is typically pumped back into the earth in a separate bore.

Alternatively, a closed-loop uses a continuous circuit of a heat transfer solution through submerged pipes. These pipes can be submerged vertically or horizontally.

Next time you are looking to reduce your carbon footprint while saving on electricity bills consider the switch to geothermal and watch this space for ATROXs latest.
